Rat Terrier is the best overal design/engineering piece here. They took all areas into consdieration and knew how it would be built! this flypmode is a design piece.. 95% of you designers have no idea how things work or go together, or materials schedule.

Hey, even if you did get a bunch of friends to vote on this, I'm definitely glad it beat out the Sentinel and Kratos, since the Sentinel was like a military sports vehicle and the Kratos was apparently scaring the engineers. So, with that said, you might have helped people out. Now, since the competition is over, I feel like giving a critique now that it can be taken more seriously since it doesn't benefit me at all. I think the rear area is a bit cramped and crowded, which could be a problem if you're off roading. What I would have done for visibility is make the rear taper back rather than indenting into the vehicle's main space. That improvement would possibly improve visibility, give you more volumetric storage, and make the seating situation more comfortable and more suitable for being on bumpy roads. I can tell you that after just the little bit of serious off-roading that I've done, you'll definitely want the head space. But you won now, so whenever four people are about to pop in, everyone is going to call shotgun... But that's okay. No design is perfect. I've been spotting a lot of the imperfections. But I really wish I would have spotted that one in check-ups, since the interior would be like a luxuriously spacious cabin with good visibility and improved function all around. I do think that the overall design here works without all the modularity, but I feel like there could be less modularity while still delivering all of the functionalities that the modularity offers. But again, congratulations, you must be incredibly excited. I'm a bit envious, admittedly, but I have no regrets. Kudos to you. By the way, I think if you had some artistic training you might stand a good chance in future competitions where art is more important... That's kind of my plan, anyways.

It is all too tempting to point to faults in the entry, when the real issue for some is the selection process. I came to this competition because I can't resist a good puzzle (see http://xkcd.com/356/ ), especially one as sexy as the XC2V. And I knew that DARPA, essentially a government venture capital org for (often relatively open-source) ideas, is always looking for interesting ideas, little sparks of genius, whether they're submitted on the back of a cocktail napkin or on professional blueprints. Enter the perfect hook (line, and sinker) for yours truly. But as far as anything being 'fishy' about a high vote quantity, remember that upon submittal the confirmation included a pre-written email to get everyone you know and everyone they know to a)join the LM site and b)vote for your design! Personally, when I found out about the whole voting system, let alone the 'get out the vote' pseudo virus tactic, my enthusiasm fell like an elevator dropping to the basement floor. But I was already committed by then and in love with my shiny new ideas. In hindsight, and upon further research, I see a little more clearly ('duh' moment): the primary 'spark of genius' being invested in here, in this contest, is the Local Motors model, as a cool new and hopefully better way to rapidly prototype a military vehicle…Not whether you the designer can come up with the cleverest way to package a bunch of wounded people between two shock towers, or stitch together a bunch of cool technology to make the most badass jeep ever. Your good ideas are so much rich and delicious gravy, make no mistake, but ultimately the "engineers at LM", and elsewhere, are going to do the engineering. The XC2V challenge is to see if LM can a)run a crowdsourced design system that as a process adds value over existing contractor bid programs, b)rapidly fabricate a rolling prototype on a modular chassis, and probably c)show the ability to use iterative feedback to produce a superior final prototype. It's a cool idea! Super cool. So in post-mortem, the winning entry a)got many, many votes, b)looks cool, c)is rapidly fabricate-able out of fiberglass and fits on the chassis, and d)is, well…open-ended, allowing the engineers to do their work. ...Nailed it! If you feel a rub, that is just the crux of the crowdsourcing model chafing at your bits--burns, don't it? Therein lies part of the grand challenge to LM. The model has to be built to keep our enthusiasm elevators up and the hooks in, or it will weaken. And like the car designs/builds, this is an iterative process too. But bravo to LM for trying, that is rad.

I've created a new forum thread where we can discuss voting freely. Victor doesn't need this I'm sure everyone agrees. http://www.local-motors.com/forum.php?cg=1993
Posted by mbaladon 1 year ago
The community at large should get to vote, otherwise it wouldn't be LM it would just be another run--of-the-mill competition. There just needs to be a better way to track who's bringing in extra accounts to prop up vote IF that is what is actually happening - should know for sure before accusations fly... -------------------- Anyway, removing the "in Top 10%" sounds like an excellent idea! It will even the playing field and guard against biased votes. ------- Speaking of the "In Top 10%", why is that still the only "score showing"?? When will the actual ### scores be revealed, and wy has it taken this long (usually it's up almost right away). I would think to know who's actually 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. would require knowing the exact scores which means they are available to reveal already yesterday, right?
Posted by Bentley Boy 1 year ago
As always, bad critics at the end..guys please give Victor his recognition and discuss this in the forum area. I expect no bad comment after this . Congratulations Victor for a good job.You gave the right design/project at the right time in the right place.
Posted by ely862me 1 year ago
the scoring system is bad working here, in my opinion only participants and staff are accepting to vote from checkup and antry , not someone else, the first time I saw the system of voting I said in my mind...this is not a good idea, in my opinion only LM has the right to vote. LM must make a special jury of 4 or 6 members some designers and some engineers Just like the big competition , arownd the world, no votes and other issues system .. Sorry if I'm wrong but I think this is it.
Posted by Stoianov 1 year ago
If this is the design that DARPA guys feel its the most appropriate for their need I am cool with their decision! That being said, I wish I could say that I was blown off by your design.. I can't say that! After reading some of the comments left to you by Niko (Idesigncars) especially from 5 days ago..it seems to me that someone was batting for you if Niko already was discussing your design with the LM engineers. It seems very improper. ( So thanking God in this case is like a boxer thanking the Lord for beating the snot out of another human being). The LM guys need to revamp how they communicate and vote and also the submissions, for instance I don't think someone that did not submit in check ups should be eligible yet they benefited from seeing all comments and designs as they progressed. also I have noticed that a full 24 hours after the deadline designs were accepted. In all fairness, a competition to be credible needs to be fair! I know that any critique after the fact sounds petty, in my case I did not enter the competition for the money ( my life does not depend on 7k) I did enter for fun. I hope our soldiers get a good vehicle.
Posted by alex_toader 1 year ago
lude- i completely agree with your point about the top ten. I feel like the top 10% should be revealed as soon as the voting is closed while we wait for the winner to be announced. i feel like that along with mbaladon's suggestion the voting system would be SO much better. i'll admit and say i got kids from my studio along with my parents, brother, and sister to vote. what do my family members know about good design ?? very little. these kind of people should not be able to dictate who wins 7,500 dollars.
Posted by PHdesign 1 year ago
About the voting system, sorry to be extending this subject on this place, since we should be talking about the concept. But, since this came up, I would vote to remove the "in top 10%", frankly it´s a thing I never understood, I think i gets people to do one of two things (if people are mean), one is voting you down if you are in top 10 and the other is voting giving you great votes to get you on top 10 (when you probably don´t deserve it), yes, it´s nice and reasuring to see "in top 10%" during the votes, you get that "yupiiiii!!" feeling, but I can´t stop thinking those comps where I was in top 10 during the first week and at the end I was off the top 10% with all "great concept, awesome" etc kinda of coments... Sorry again to be talking about this here, but it´s something that´s been bugging me for sometime and since PH and others brougth it up.
Posted by Lude 1 year ago
First I would like to thank the Lord for giving me the strength and will to do the project. It was not easy to come up with a full concept in four weeks with a full time job. Thank you all for the love and support! I could not do this alone and I thank all of you for voting. You have no idea what this win means to me and my family. I dedicate this design to the troops who sacrifice their lives and family to put this great nation first. I pray that my design will help them make every mission safe and successful. This is just the beginning.
Posted by Victor Garcia 1 year ago
mbaladon- that is a good point...i think that would be a very nice way to eliminate that possible problem ...i was also curious if we were going to be given or scores for the comp? It would be cool to see where we stacked up in the comp. thanks!
Posted by PHdesign 1 year ago
I think the voting system could benefit from a revision. Why doesn't LM only allow to vote only those who submitted an entry? Only participants and staff get to vote. I'm new to the community and it caught my attention that nothing could stop anyone to rig the votes by creating accounts and voting for themselves all night long, or have throngs of friends do the same. As PH said, $7500 is quite a sum. Maybe I'm wrong and LM has some anticheat tech I don't know. I would like to know what the rest think about this for the future comps.
Posted by mbaladon 1 year ago
Congrats! Nice job!
Posted by gumusdesign 1 year ago
truth is guys when you get 145 votes, the darpa votes are a very very small percent of this. I remember nyko saying that the darpa votes did have a LITTLE BIT more weight than the rest of the voters but there weren't that many darpa votes. i understand why people are saying that this competition relies heavily on function but I would disagree and say that it relies 50% on funtion and 50% on a beautiful design. Those were the two categories to vote right ? and because that is the case, in my opinion it just doesnt add up that this was chosen as the winner. 7,500 hundred dollars is no joke...this was a design competition not a popularity contest. i really do feel bad about putting down another design but i feel as a LM member is reserve that right in this case. Do any other LM members feel kind of let down that they have to watch this get built as opposed to the 2nd or 3rd place entries ??...is it possible that the voting system could get switched to a split system where the LM community votes only count for 50% and the LM board counts for the other 50% ?
Posted by PHdesign 1 year ago
Votes from DARPA would definetely have to be stronger than anyother vote of the community, since this is a prototype to be built and hopefully used in the military after some development. But because of this, DARPA would have to comment on all Top 10% projects and clearly state the reasons why for the top 3 choices. A winning design is not about a pretty sketch, it's about a strong concept and solid development. Even though I also get the "errmmm" feeling, I have to admit it's a solid entry. But because there were also many solid entries, DARPA will have to comment on this.
Posted by marceloaguiar 1 year ago
@PHDesign and Bentley Boy: I have to say I agree to some extent with your posts, but I´m glad it wasn´t just pretty sketches that won, it has alot of functionality, others have it too, maybe more, but overall it has all, frankly have that feeling "meh..." But still it has something that I accept as a winner, it has balance. Also, I assume DARPA played the major roles on the votings... It´s their choice. Let´s see how this comes to life. And, since nobody coments on my question on the forums, hopefully you will here, frankly silence is not my thing, I prefer a YES or NO, bullcrap aside. Is DARPA going to coment on the winning entry, podium and other top-10? I would really like to hear their input on my final entry, I think in these kind of comps jurys HAVE to coment the entries, I think it´s best way for us to EVOLVE and become better at what we do, silence doesn´t help, I got that from my teacher at university and frankly it sucks. So let me know, a yes or a no about that. Also, will the votes be displayed later on? Would like to know in which position each top ten finished, also curious to know where my entry end up. Thanks in advance for whoever replies.

A BIG CONGRATS VICTOR. A very comprehensive packaging exploration and attention to function. Hi 5
Posted by Me2 1 year ago
Honestly, fuzzy feelings aside and the due cordial congrats aside, PHdesign has a strong point. I think we saw a bit similar outcome in the last competition, too... -------- But then again, if the DARPA vote was weighed heavier over the community votes, than maybe this was the best fit in their opinion...they did seem to more focused on function in some of their comments on other entries/checkups. ---------- Can we see actual scores yet? It would be better to tell then, especially if this win was down to tenths of a percentage.

well done, nice modular units :) looks buildable
Posted by Franze 1 year ago
ok here goes...sorry i'm going to sound like a jerk and victor i apologize i really do because i am not trying to discredit the amount of time and hardwork you put into this. I really feel like if someone were to put this design up on the wall in my studio at school it would get an ehhh reaction. i feel like you did the research and that shows...you have VERY good solutions so kudos for all of that really. this is a solid entry. i do want to say congrats for winning the comp but i can't seem to find it in me to do so because i just feel like there were other entrys that did fufill the brief quite well and had absolutely stunning designs which is half of this competition. I was shocked to say the least when this was announced the winner. i think it is a little sketchy that the winner of this competition had the most votes (by alot) sorry i'm probably comming off as a complete bitter a-hole. but i just feel like it needed to be said. I just feel like when you look at this and then look at marcs (sixten) its like night and day...am i being way out of line?? i've never made a comment like this before on LM and am always always for positive comments and critisism but i really believe this one is just wrong. once again though victor i know how much work was put into this and by no means am i calling this a weak design/entry and i'm definitely not trying to say mine was more deserving because i know i don't deserve the podium in this comp.

The image did not load up. Let me try that again. In case it cant load, look at my sketchs. The sketch I am talking about is a front tip up view with the windows in orange and panels on the roof. I numbered the panels 1-4.
Posted by Victor Garcia 1 year ago
I completely agree with you Niko. I work with Engineers everyday so I know exactly what you are talking about. I know I would have to compromise with engineers to make it work within the project timeframe. Time and money are always key factors to making a concept. See the attached image; it was one of my initial concepts. To have the top of the roof made up of panels that can removed. I was thinking they could be stored at the rear bed of the Flypmode. Maybe we could implement what you suggested; “adapting canopy.” Maybe the canopy can be made up of Kevlar??? Once the contest is over I plan to make refinements to the design. I know modifications have to take place to keep the production cost down and make it that more realistic. Thanks for the feedback and most of all for the great work you do for us fans!
Posted by Victor Garcia 1 year ago
Victor, thank you for your kind words, I am really glad to hear you had a good time in this challenge, and I hope that feeling is echoed by other designers. It's been extremely fun to watch all of the amazing entries come in and to see how many extremely innovative and creative solutions were brought to the table. This is proof that co-creation is a truly incredible way of educating one another in all fields, be it from what makes a sports car cool to what makes a military vehicle relevant. As far as the Flypmode, this is a great design that really takes modularity to the next level-- the flexible rear module idea is both innovative and well thought out. The drawback however is that after talking with Local Motors engineers this morning, they feel it would be complex to engineer and make it work. IF we had to build this design, they were telling me that one of two options were possible-- A that we would make the longer, larger configuration, or, we would take the idea of the small pick-up-ish sketch on your presentation, and then build an adapting canopy that would extend the bed out and complete your closed design. It's not that we don't have the ability to engineer the system, but time is our enemy with this project-- we have to have the functioning concept vehicle finished by the end of June, so that only gives a few months to engineer the components, create molds for the body, and build the concept vehicle. If we had a few extra months I'm sure we could engineer the flexible modular space. But I think the solution the engineers were proposing if this were to make it is a pretty solid one. Again, thanks for the kind words and thanks for such a solid, thoughtful entry! Well done!
Posted by idesigncars 1 year ago
First and foremost I would like to thank Local Motors and DARPA for the opportunity to design a military vehicle. Thank you DARPA for providing not only all the package information needed but the stories of true war events or missions. Thank you Nyko for setting it all up and giving designers the support needed to submit our design. Last but not least for all of you who voted for me. I think I have a unique and purposeful design. Hope to be in the top three. Cant wait to see the results.

Overall, a decent design. I'm just a little confused about the "control tower" claim. There's so much "stuff" (driver, pillars, gear, passengers) in the way to easily track aircraft movement for any real length of time. I think it would have been more effective to somehow elevate the TALO officer so that all that "stuff" would be clear of his view.

Wow, nice job Victor. :) Love the renders. The concept itself seems very practical, very interesting. About darpa, I make myself the same questions, because more then the votes I expect coments... After all they are the "special jury" of this competition, so I assume they will coment and critique every project, that´s the only way to make us evolve. For now I see some coments on some projects and others without, I think that´s not the best way for us to learn. But there are still few days to vote/coment hopefully they will reach all of us. Good luck. :)
